Underwire vs. Wire Free

At The Fitting Closet, we believe your best support will always come from wearing an underwire. That being said, if underwires simply don’t work for you, there are a number of great wire-free styles that offer excellent support. It is important to understand the difference between wired and wire free bras so you can make the best choice for your body.

Why should I wear an underwire?

Underwires lift and separate the breast tissue by being fitted against the body and surrounding the breast tissue.  The wire should never be placed on top of the breast tissue when fitted properly. Wires come in different shapes, lengths, and curvatures to fit different body types and sizes.  Choosing the right fit will keep you better supported and more comfortable. The strength of the underwire is difficult to match by a wire free bra. The best way for a bra structure to provide support is the wire, followed by seams, and then a solid band.

My wires hurt, what should I do?

Typically, underwires are uncomfortable because they are ill-fitting.  If you wires are digging into the breast, the cup is either too small or your band is too loose to hold the wires in place, or both. If your band is nice and snug and the wires are surrounding the breast tissue and laying flat against the body but it is still too uncomfortable to wear, try a wire free bra. The least supportive bra available is going to be wire free, seamless, and made from a lightweight fabric. If you go away from wires, look for bras with seams, powernet in the sides or back, and a substantial band that runs under the breasts. The Fitting Closet’s favorite wire free bra is the Goddess Alice for it’s superior structure and fit.
